We had been promising ourselves a day in London to see the poppies at the Tower of London and yesterday was the day. Our luck was in as the day was bright and sunny without being too warm.
We had seen the pictures in the newspapers but they do not compare to the real thing, it is just stunning.
The installation is called Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Created by ceramic artist Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper, 888,246 ceramic poppies will progressively fill the Tower’s famous moat until November the 11th. The installation will then be taken apart and each poppy cleaned and packed into a box to be shipped to its new owner. The poppies are for sale at £25 each.
We were amazed that it has been volunteers that have assembled the installation, all slots have now been filled but you can still volunteer to take it apart and help send the poppies to their new owners.
